In your portlet's viewpoint-portlet.xml file, remove the config-url node.
Thanks but I guess that is used for older versions. I had already tried that but then the original preferences area stops working. I have seen that in the Widgetopia portlet, the preferences button is diasbled in the same manner as you are suggesting but using tdpdk 13.11 and tdpdk 13.10 I am unable to disable it that way. Any ideas on that?

You can't disable the preferences in Roles Manager if your portlet has preferences. It is a feature of Viewpoint that the Viewpoint admin can set any preferences on a per-role basis. If you need to change the behavior of the preferences screen when it's accessed from Roles Manager, you can check the "isConfig" variable in your JSP. This variable is set to true when setting the default role preferences in Roles Manager.
